Fred Armisen sat down with Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel at the Paley Center in New York tonight for a special InsideMedia event.
During the event, Armisen spoke about how he came to SNL (he was discovered by Bob Odenkirk doing characters in L.A.) and his own unique approach to character-driven comedy.
Said Odenkirk in an email to Krisel, “Fred made me laugh. He has an immersion into the character … Fred brings people to life with human-sized renderings.”
On his early days at SNL, Armisen said, “You really are lost, and there’s no one there to teach you … I submitted a million sketches that made no sense.”
Armisen then discussed his Thunderant days, how he met Carrie Brownstein, and how they work together on Portlandia.
“We take a script and we gradually just toss it away,” said Armisen of the writing-to-improv style of his hit IFC show.
